What happens when a Troupe of proud and pugnacious Fairies encounters a party of patronizing Parliamentary Peers? The answer—complete chaos! This is the community of players in place at the beginning of Iolanthe, the 7th and, some would argue, the greatest operetta from the collaboration of William Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. The opera premiered in 1882 and immediately became a favorite of Savoyards and Londoners. Valley Light Opera is bringing new life to this wonderful operetta with an array of beautiful voices, lively dancing, glorious costumes, and a healthy helping of humor. We invite you to an evening of laughter, merriment, and happy endings. In the world of Topsy-Turveydom that Gilbert embraced, everything was designed to amuse!
Valley Light Opera (VLO) is delighted to announce that once again, Michael Greenebaum will offer pre-curtain talks at the two matinee performances of Iolanthe, November 5 and 12. Michael is a founding member of VLO and has conducted and/or staged 18 fall productions since 1975. His remarks will be especially appropriate for newcomers to Gilbert & Sullivan and children. Michael will share his extensive knowledge of the Gilbert & Sullivan Victorian-era theatrical partnership and offer suggestions for listening to Iolanthe. There will be time for questions and comments.
Ticket holders are welcome to arrive a few minutes before 1:00 p.m. and enter the auditorium for the talk. The talk will end promptly at 1:30 when the doors will open for general admission and everyone should move to their assigned seats. Curtain time is 2 o’clock.
