The Pirates of Penzance is one of the most-loved of Gilbert & Sullivan’s operettas, the Broadway musicals of the Victorian age. Subtitled, “The Slave of Duty,” it tells the story of Frederic, apprenticed at an early age to a band of pirates, who is torn between his duty to support his pirate brethren or his newfound love’s family, depending on whether or not he is still an apprentice. Unfortunately, he was born in leap year on the 29th of February, and his parents hired a sloppy lawyer to draw up the contract. Wonderful music, costumes, sets, and dancing. Aaaaaargh!
